Succession Planning
Do you have the bench strength to quickly fill a critical vacancy created by the unexpected departure of one of your key leaders? Do you know from where in your organization your future leaders will come? Succession planning answers these question and allows you to create a roadmap to successful leadership transition. Three critical aspects of succession planning are to specify your company’s critical leadership roles, identify and assess the employees with potential to assume those future roles and embark on a program to develop those employees. Ideally the program will give the next generation of leaders the opportunity and support to gain the necessary experiences, knowledge and abilities to prepare them to succeed in leadership roles.
Succession planning ensures that there is highly qualified talent “on the bench” ready to assume new and greater responsibilities when the situation warrants. However, 54% of the respondents to a December 2009 Leathers Milligan–OI Partners survey revealed that they do not currently have enough qualified people ready to succeed their current executives and managers. Even more telling is the fact that a full 14% were not confident that they even currently employed enough people with the potential to become their company’s future leaders.
Leathers Milligan management consultants help design and implement strategic, proactive succession planning systems that support your strategic business objectives, integrate with your performance management and individual leadership training and development programs and ensure you have the right talent for your organization. Leathers Milligan can help you reap the many benefits of formal succession planning: improved workforce capabilities, talent prepared for the next assignment, lower hiring costs, greater employee satisfaction, better retention, more focused training, mentoring and coaching efforts and an overall enhanced commitment to the success of the organization.
